The Henry Hudson Regional School’s High School STEAM Academy is off to a great start.

On Wednesday, November 29th, STEM/STEAM Coordinator Mrs. Leigh Fitzsimmons accepted a $777 grant award from The First Energy Corporation.  The grant funds are going to be used toward the purchase of supplies for an upcoming unit on energy and circuitry in the Introduction to STEM class.  Once the high-school students have mastered the concept of building various types of circuits, they will turn-key the lesson and teach the middle school enrichment class.

On Monday, December 4th, HHRS STEAM Academy and robotics team students traveled to Monmouth University along with Dr. Compton, Mrs. Kingsmore and Mrs. Fitzsimmons as part of the HHRS-Monmouth University partnership that was established during the 2016-2017 school year.  The trip was arranged by MU Biology Professor James Nickels.  Students were able to guide underwater remote operated vehicles (ROVs) through an underwater obstacle course.  The students had a wonderful time, and it was great for them to see applications of technology they are learning in the classroom.  “It was very generous of Professor Nickels to donate his time and use of his equipment to help foster a love of engineering and robotics in our students.  They walked away with not only insight into how robotics and programming can be applied in the field for research, but also an appreciation for how gaming skills can actually be applied in the real world!,” said Mrs. Fitzsimmons.

Finally, members of HHRS administration, staff and the Board of Education have formed a STEM/STEAM Task Force to research and evaluate future partnerships for the program.  Currently in the works is an exciting partnership with the United States Army which will present a wealth of opportunities to HHRS’ STEAM Academy students.
