For children in Atlantic Highlands, it’s becoming one of their holiday traditions:  make a list of all the presents they want to open on that special morning, play the dreidel game to accumulate chocolate gelt, and go back to school for two hours at night to hang out with their teachers.

Okay, maybe that last item isn’t exactly a tradition, but it’s just what 85 children did on Thursday, December 7.  Atlantic Highlands Elementary School teachers sponsored their annual Parents’ Night Out event to raise money for the school’s PTO “Families in Need” fund.  With a record number of children attending this year, the teachers were able to raise over $1,300.

At this pajamas-encouraged event, children were able to make holiday ornaments and crafts, play board games, color pictures, solve word search puzzles, and watch a movie.  Moving from one activity to another without having to raise their hand and ask permission was part of the fun for some children.  Others just enjoyed chatting with their teachers in a relaxed setting.

Lindsay Hensle, a second grade teacher and one of the coordinators of the event, explained, “Atlantic Highlands’ teachers understand how special this time of year is for our children, and Parents’ Night Out is our way to help make sure every child gets to enjoy the holidays.”

Parents are happy to leave their children at school while they shop at local merchants, enjoy a quiet dinner, or stay home and wrap presents.  The evening was a huge success, and some parents would agree that this event has become one of their favorite holiday traditions as well.
